First Time!

Well, I discovered today that there is a first time for everything. Even some things you don't think could ever remotely happen on this earth, happen.

Today I arrived at work (UPS) and the first thing I did after my arrival was to interview an applicant. Took about 30 minutes. After this was completed my Full Time Supervisor came down stairs from the managers office and said, "I need you to come up stairs with me." Stuff like this never worries me because I know that almost 90% of the time I handle my business. The 10% are usually not mistakes that are major, but they are mistakes that I know occurred. Well, I sat down in the office and I preceded to take a scolding from my manager for me being to Diligent, hard working, and for being a team player for the company and working overtime to get the job done. I like to do a good job, however my manager proceeded to tell me that I should not have worked over my PT 5 hours a day. He was upset because I did not call his Cell phone and request to work over while he was gone for a few days at his brother-in-laws funeral. I did however send him an email requesting the approval to work over my normal allotted hours at the beginning of the week. I didn't even know where he was... I was just told he was not in the office that day.

Did you truly get that though.... I was reprimanded for going above and beyond the call of duty to get the job completed.

I believe I need to setup my scenario so you truly know why I was working over my allotted 5 hours a day... Oh wait, I am forced to do this everyday because of the workload that is given to me.

Anyway, here is the short version. UPS purchased a company. Built a new building and it was my responsibility to staff the building. I was given a number of 19 people to hire for the new building and 11 people for my existing building split between two weeks. All of these staffing requests were told to me two weeks before they wanted the people hired. FYI, It takes 7-14 days just to do hiring paperwork to get someone ready for hire after the interview, so I am already pushing my luck. I had nobody even interviewed at the time and what is even worse is that I wasn't getting any applicant flow from my recruiters. I had to open tour slots on the website and hope for the best. I worked my tale off to tour, interview, process, and do all the paperwork for these 30 hires, plus all my other work, plus cover for the Twilight sort and their problems. Oh did I forget to mention that there is usually only three of us to do this work and my boss had a vacation during one of these weeks. Therefore there was really only two of us to complete this task.


From my understanding I was always told from my bosses that I needed to do whatever it takes to get the job done and today I was told not to work over my hours.

In this conversation with my manager I brought up the fact that I am constantly interrupted with problems almost 85% of the time I am working and that affects my ability to leave on time. I then preceded to explain that it is unrealistic to not help people after he told me that you need to ignore the interruptions. I said, "I can't just tell an employee that needs my help that I can't help them." He said, "Yes you can!" THAT IS UNREALISTIC!

Man, I still feel that is the most unrealistic thing I have ever heard... "Would you tell a drowning man I can't help you because I am too busy!.... NO, because that would be unrealistic."

To top it all off he told my boss that she should work as many hours as it takes to get the work done because she is a FT supervisor, but that I have to go when I reach my 5 hours each day. We both jumped on that saying what about our team concept. I personally won't leave my boss struggling to get something done because I have reached my 5 hours. If I did that she would be working 20 hours a day. With my help at least she can leave at 12 hours..... We are a team... If one works hard and over hours shouldn't the other members of the team.

RECAP TIME:
So for the first time in my life I have been reprimanded for working above the call of duty to get the job done right.... Wouldn't you want me as your President?!?!?!?!
